3 -STAR - This quartz rock is from the Piedmont in North Carolina. Sections of the rock's sculpture illustrates a man's head. The artwork appears to be holding a head or looking off in the distance. Animals and other characters are shown as pictures in pictures. This rock can sit upright, perfect for the curiosity cabinet.

Keep in mind that viewing these illustrations so vividly is with the use of a camera.  Over time paintings fade. Cameras capture lights and darks that our naked eyes cannot. This is portable rock art, meaning it was carried by someone to bring strengths they believed the rock held in its artwork. A Totem.

Illustrations appear in different shades of light. Tilt the stone North, South, East, and West to see something different, even on diagonals. Other ways to view it are to hold the rock away at arm's length or set the object down and then back up roughly 10'.

A conversation piece for the Curiosity Cabinet.

About the star count - I grade each rock that comes to be sold with three, four, or 5 stars. Three stars indicate three attributes present in the rock. Four means four attributes and five means five. See the list of attributes.

  1. The profile of the rock is sculpted as an animal, human figure, or cartoon-ish character.
  2. Sculpted images or shapes.
  3. Etched petroglyphs in the rocks surface.
  4. Faces within faces - meaning that when you spot one image, look elsewhere then back. the image looks different and may be difficult to see again. Also, when a section of drawing or painting is gently touch. The face may turn another color or a different face altogether.
  5. Holes in the rock or depressed area count as well. Usually there is a small figure or two crafted in the depression.
